Since graduating from the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) in 2023, Nancy Mahoro has risen as a driving force in Rwanda’s dairy sector. Currently, she serves as the Research and Development Lead at Masaka Farms, a prominent food processing company in Rwanda. In this role, Mahoro is redefining innovation by developing new products and enhancing existing ones for the market.
Mahoro attributes her success to the comprehensive foundation provided by RICA. “RICA gave me a very good foundation, whether in practical farming, leadership, or the entrepreneurship classes we took,” she states.
Significantly, the institute instilled a unique approach to problem-solving. This approach emphasizes systems thinking and a holistic view. Consequently, this training allows her to analyze raw materials, processes, and outcomes effectively. As a result, she can prevent issues before they arise and ensure long-term product integrity.
Tangible Impact and New Products
Her impact at Masaka Farms is already evident. For instance, Mahoro has spearheaded the launch of several popular innovations. These include new yogurt flavors like mango and passion, as well as fruited yogurts. Additionally, she developed an eggless mayonnaise, which has earned high customer satisfaction.
Furthermore, the Masaka team is particularly excited about her recent breakthrough. She successfully developed an ambient yogurt recipe. This new product has passed rigorous testing and is now slated for production.
“When Nancy got the new role as Research and Development Lead, we’ve seen significant product impacts and enhanced robustness since she started working in that role,” reveals Julian Kiiza, Masaka Farms’ Director of Commercial Operations. “She comes with a lot of resilience, and she has a research-driven mindset. This has brought a lot of change in our research and development department in Masaka.”, emphasizes Julian.
A Model for Future Innovation Leaders
Mahoro’s journey demonstrates RICA’s mission to cultivate impactful leaders. She encourages current RICA students to “be the change, be the leaders of innovation.”
Moreover, her message to the industry is clear. “RICA is truly creating a significant change in the talent they’re sending into the market. So, give them an opportunity, give them a chance to showcase their abilities. I’m sure you will also be impressed.”
