HERE WE LEARN. HERE WE CREATE.

THE HOWARD G. BUFFETT FOUNDATION

A new and innovative academic institution, RICA is designed to transform the face of agriculture by introducing a new way of thinking and technological innovation to Rwanda. Howard G. Buffett’s vision is to create a facility that enables and empowers young people to be the drivers of change in agricultural innovation. With increased access to information, high quality academic instruction, access to new technology, and a locally tailored community extension program, RICA students will be able to remodel local and regional farming communities. Inspired by the concept of a land-grant university system where the local government devotes resources to develop a world-class and highly selective agricultural education, you will be equipped with all the tools and resources to foster transformation. In partnership with MINAGRI and CUSP, Howard Buffett believes and is investing in young people and their unique ability to drive the kind of agricultural transformation that will impact and empower many generations to come.  The use of a Land-grant university model is tailored to local Rwandan farming practices while improving the quality of life of the local community. Agriculture is no longer limited to rural subsistence farming but an endless possibility for agricultural entrepreneurs, educators, policy makers and IT & communications specialists. Are you a young passionate Rwandan ready to revolutionize the face of agriculture? We invite you to join our movement of to change the face of agriculture by and for Rwandans.

RICA (RWANDA INSTITUTE FOR CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE)

A unique English language institution dedicated to preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders of Rwanda and East Africa, RICA will combine research, education, and extension services to train Rwanda’s next generation of leaders in agriculture while supporting national priorities for agricultural development.

RICA students will learn the principles of “conservation agriculture” and “one health” while emphasizing written communication, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Students will engage closely with communities near the institute to ensure research insights are informed by local needs and designed to benefit local communities. Students will also be exposed to six different enterprises including small ruminants, dairy, poultry and swine, row and forage crops, vegetable and tree crops, and mechanization and irrigation.

Its core mission is to teach its students to be socially responsible, innovative, and entrepreneurial, and to endow them with the practical skills needed to contribute to modernized and sustainable agriculture. The foundation is currently invested in educating the next generation of Rwandan agricultural innovators.

LETTER FROM VICE CHANCELLOR

Welcome to RICA – the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture.

RICA is part of a global movement to elevate the value of agriculture to society – to recognize that feeding the world can be done efficiently, cost-effectively, and in ways that conserve our natural resources. To do this, RICA will teach and research innovative ways to protect and enhance the soil, to produce a variety of crops for human use as well as animal production, and to share what we learn with farmers and their advisors in new, effective ways.

If you are interested in joining us, we are anxious to visit with you. We are seeking candidates who would like to be part of a world-class faculty interested in teaching in an experiential learning environment, and researching new, innovative approaches to agriculture for Rwanda and East Africa. We are recruiting students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in conservation agriculture, who are anxious to learn using hands-on approaches, integrating practical experiences with sound agricultural science; students who will become innovators and entrepreneurs – leaders for the future of agriculture in Rwanda and East Africa.

Welcome to RICA – where the future of agriculture for Rwanda is in your hands.
