RICA’s state-of-the-art campus offers students numerous amenities to support education, growth, and quality of life
RICA’s modern, eco-friendly campus is designed to provide students with a holistic learning experience immersed in conservation agriculture. Located about 60 kilometers south of Kigali in Karama, Rweru Sector, Bugesera District, RICA’s campus is equipped with numerous amenities.
All of our facilities have been built using sustainable materials and natural ventilation, reflecting RICA’s commitment to protecting the environment and long-term resilience of the land. The campus also has high-speed internet to support digital learning, research, and communication for all students and staff.
Student Residence Halls
- Common Living Room: Students can spend their downtime relaxing, socializing, watching television, and playing games like table tennis, billiards, foosball, board games, and PlayStation – fostering a strong sense of community and fun.
- Kitchen Area: Each residence hall features a kitchen area equipped with a fridge, microwave, kettle, drinking water, essential utensils, and a sink, enabling students to heat and store their own food.
- Laundry Room: Each resident hall includes a laundry room equipped with a washing machine, handwashing supplies, and an outdoor drying area for hanging clothes.
To further support students, Residential Assistants (RAs) and the president and vice president of the Student Representative Council (SRC) have their own private rooms within these resident halls. This enables them to be readily available to support student needs and to serve as leaders and peer mentors on campus.
Faculty and Staff Housing
RICA also provides dedicated resident halls for some faculty and staff. On-campus housing for faculty and staff is allocated on an as-needed and merit basis. This helps ensure that faculty and staff are readily available to support students and facilitate the smooth operation of the institute.
Campus Dining Hall
RICA’s dining hall, located within the Buffett Foundation Campus Center, is a lively area where the entire RICA community comes together to enjoy daily meals. Our dining hall is more than just a place to eat; it’s a central meeting point that fosters connection and a sense of community throughout the day, from breakfast through dinner. We are proud to partner with the famous Sundowner, known for preparing delicious and diverse meals that cater to a variety of tastes. The inviting atmosphere of the dining hall, combined with the quality of the food, makes it a welcoming space to refuel and connect with fellow members of the RICA community.
Recreation Facilities
Beyond academic spaces, RICA offers extensive recreational facilities designed to promote student well-being and work-life balance. Our campus features a modern fitness and gym center, football pitches, volleyball courts (including beach volleyball), basketball courts, and a beach area near Lake Kilimbi. Music enthusiasts can explore their talents in our dedicated music room equipped with various instruments. Additionally, residence halls enhance the student experience with indoor recreation options including table tennis, board games, PlayStation gaming, billiards, and more. These diverse recreational options provide students with opportunities to relieve stress, develop new skills, build friendships, and maintain physical and mental health throughout their educational journey.
Academic Buildings
RICA’s modern classroom buildings provide optimal learning environments designed to enhance the educational experience. The classrooms accommodate either 42 or 84 students and are equipped with projectors and sound systems to facilitate engaging lectures and presentations. The campus also has specialized laboratory facilities including chemistry, biology, soil, and analytical labs with modern equipment, where students gain hands-on experience on the theoretical knowledge they acquire. These thoughtfully designed academic spaces support RICA’s commitment to delivering high-quality, application-based education in conservation agriculture in comfortable and technologically advanced settings.
University Farms & Production Facilities
At RICA, learning extends beyond the classroom into our world-class, student/faculty run agribusiness enterprises. These facilities enable students to gain hands-on experience working in agricultural operations at varying scales, working alongside expert faculty and technologists. Key production facilities on campus include:

First-Year Farms: These plots, managed by first-year students, provide foundational training in small-scale crop production. They also include pasture land for dairy cows and chicken barns for poultry farming at a smallholder-farmer level.

Livestock Enterprises: These commercial-style operations focus on areas that students choose for their specializations during their second year on campus. For students specializing in livestock production, the campus includes dairy, poultry (layers and broilers), and swine enterprise facilities.

Processing Enterprises: Commercial-style processing operations on campus include a dairy processing facility, meat processing enterprise, and processing operations for fruits and vegetables.

Specialized Enterprises: These agribusiness-style operations include a grain center, mechanization and irrigation facilities, fruits and vegetable enterprise, fruit orchards, and pivot farms.
RICA Health Clinic
Located within the Buffett Foundation Campus Center, the RICA Clinic is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our entire campus community – students, faculty, and staff. The clinic’s dedicated healthcare professionals provide a range of essential services to ensure a healthy and thriving environment. Services include: health education, medical consultation and treatment, mental health and counselling, reproductive health counselling, and laboratory tests.
Campus Resource Center
The Campus Resource Center provides students with a study environment designed to accommodate various learning preferences. Students have access to two dedicated study rooms, each equipped with round tables for small group discussions, individual seats for individual learning, a comfortable lounge area, and additional resources. This thoughtfully designed space supports both individual and group study, offering a convenient environment where students can focus on academic work, research, and peer learning activities.
Faculty and Staff Offices
The Buffett Foundation Campus Center also houses our faculty and staff offices, designed for accessibility and collaboration. These spaces enable students to easily connect with faculty and support personnel while promoting interaction among faculty members. This ensures efficient communication across departments and comprehensive support for students throughout their educational journey.
